During a conference call with reporters this morning at 9:30, U.S. Senator Jim Bunning disputed a story that appeared on KYPolitics.org yesterday. The story said that Bunning was leaning towards retirement from the Senate and is contemplating potential successors.
On the conference call Bunning told reporters, "I'm going to be a candidate in 2010."
With respect to Senator Bunning, KYPolitics.org stands by the story.
More to come, including audio from the call.
UPDATE: Here's a YouTube version of the conference call audio. There's some banter about Senator Bunning's baseball career midway through, but stay tuned because there's more on this story on the other side.

Brett - Sounds like your story hit too close to home. Can't believe Bunning took this so far. Keep on nailing them.

That conference call is almost as funny as Allie's car show!

Jim Bunning is a disgrace to the KY GOP and our Country. He might be the most cocky old man on the planet. We all will be so much better off to get an alternative like Trey or Anne. This guy is in his late 70's and still brings up his baseball career. Remind you of someone? Maybe Uncle Rico for Napaleon Dynomite?

No joke 5:50. Listen to the call. What do you believe more - that Jim Bunning could get a $22 million contract to pitch in Major League Baseball or that he met with McConnell and Grayson about resigning his seat?
Brett likely nailed this one between the eyes, it just hit too close to home for the big right hander. Brett, you should just be glad he didn't say you looked like Saddam Hussein's sons.

Hell, if he'd said that about Brett, Brett would be the lieutenant governor-elect now.
The only reason that Mongiardo came so close in that Senate race and then became the Dems' rising star is because of Bunning. Mongiardo was headed for a rump-kicking of Lois Combs Weinberg proportions before Bunning started opening his big yap and saying stupid stuff. That's what got Mongiardo close; people weren't voting for him, they were voting against Bunning. But it made Mongiardo the young stud (or middle-aged stud with a thing for young studettes) of the Dems.

I like Senator Bunning and hope that he does run again in 2010. He's been a true Conservative stalwart on issues that I care about -- illegal immigration, the war against Jihadistan, and the economy. That's not to say that Anne or Trey wouldn't be terrific too but I know Bunning's record and sure appreciate the way he votes.
