Multiple sources have told KyPolitics.org that Cathy Bailey, who has served as U.S. Ambassador to Latvia since 2005, is giving up her post and coming home to Kentucky.
Rumors persist that she has been tapped by U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell to replace Steve Robertson as chair of the Republican Party of Kentucky. The move could happen, sources say, as early as January. (A change in leadership requires Executive Committee approval, but with McConnell's influence, it will be a mere formality.)
Bailey, a prolific Republican fundraiser, was nominated to the Latvia gig by President Bush after bundling campaign cash as a Bush Ranger in 2004. She served as a Republican National Committee member from Kentucky from 2000-04.
Bailey, known for her attention to detail and professional nature, is very close to McConnell. Her move to RPK would provide him with a high level of security, not to mention financial reassurance - Bailey is, flat out, among the best political fundraisers in the country.
Note: As we recently reported, Bailey is supporting Rudy Giuliani in the presidential contest, although we doubt she'll disclose that publicly. Her support may be an indication of how McConnell leans, but few expect him to endorse before a nominee is chosen.
